A blind-spot monitor or BSM is an advanced driving assistant system that warns you when a vehicle or another object enters your blind-spot while you're driving. It uses radar or ultrasonic sensors in the left and right sides of the rear bumper to detect anything that gets to close to you on the road. If another vehicle does enter into your blind spot - which often happens when someone merges into your lane or you change lanes yourself - the system will alert you before you collide with it. Some systems also use cameras and on-board monitors that activate when you're backing up or changing lanes to give you added visibility.
Blind-spot monitors do make driving safer and easier, but they are no substitute for paying attention on the road. Your own system may warn you of an accident before it happens, but you are still responsible for checking your own blind spots and being careful when driving.
